Concepción: The History at hand...

Manufacturing industries, port facilities and nearby coal deposits have all conspired to make Concepción Chile's second most important city, economically speaking. It's also the most left-leaning - indeed, Chileans consider it a socialist hotbed - mainly because the intellectual influences of the dozen or so universities scattered through town.

When it comes to tourism, is very exciting too! Concepción is particulary Scenic and there ir a lot to do. So, if you need a break up a long cross-Chile journey, do some shopping or change your air tickets, Concepción leafy squares, busy shopping streets and a great nightlife mean a pleasant stop-off

HISTORY

In 1551, Pedro de Valdivia founded the original City of Concepción north of where it is

 today,near Penco (indeed, Concepción inhabitants are still know as Penquistas). Over the next few centuries the city was repeatedly besieged during the Spanish-Mapuche War, attack by British and Dutch pirates and devastated by earthquakes in 1730 and 1751. But the colonizing residents stuck to their guns, and Concepción eventually became one of the Spanish empire's southmost fortified outposts.


After independence, Concepción isolation from Santiago, coupled with the presence of lignite (brown coal) near lotaa, a coastal town south of Concepción, fomented an autonomous industrial tradition. The export of wheat for the California gold-rush market further spurred the area's economic growth.




ORIENTATION


Concepción sits on the north banks of the Biobio River, Chile's only significant navigable waterway, about 10 km from the river's mouth. Hills block the city's expansion to the south and east, so Concepción's urban sprawl is moving rapidly in the opposite direction, toward Talcahuano, 15 km to the northwest.

 Downtown Concepción is a standard grid centered on Plaza Independencia, a bustling wide-open square with the city's cathedral. it's bordered on the east and west bt Anibal Pinto and Caupolicán; and on the north and south by Barros Arana, a busy pedestrian street, and O'higgins, a mejor east-west thoroughfare.
